PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel swimming and diving team set seven pool records in a dual-meet with Binghamton on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons also came away with wins on both the men's and women's sides.
The Dragons set new records in the men's; 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard backstroke, 100 and 200-yard butterfly and in the women's; 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke. The men came away with the win over the Bearcats, 188-112, and women did the same by the score of 162-137.
The records started falling early on with the men's 200-yard medley relay team of Joel Berryman, Chad Schmidt, Kyle Lukens and Mike Shaeffer broke the previous mark of 1:33.82 with their winning time of 1:32.09. Berryman then broke his own pool record, which he set last season, in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.19. The new mark is just under .80 faster than his previous time.
Lukens added to his afternoon by setting a new pool record in the 200-yard butterfly. Lukens broke the record - that has stood since 1989 - by over a second with a 1:51.14. Later on, Lukens posted another new record, this time in the 100-yard butterfly. The Plymouth Meeting native broke the mark of Hans Gillan of Delaware by just under a second with his 49.52. Lukens now owns the pool and school records in two events, the 100 and 200-yard butterfly.
Rachel Bernhardt set a new mark in the very next event - the 100-yard breaststroke - with her winning time of 1:04.76. Bernhardt was less than two tenths faster than the previous mark, which was held by Kelsey Jenkinsen of La Salle since last season. The sophomore was not done on the afternoon, later on she broke the six year old mark in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.08. The New Jersey native now owns both the school and pool records in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke.
Gillian Gress put her name in the record books after her performance in the 200-yard backstroke. The freshman set a new mark with a time 2:04.59, which broke the mark previous held by Kellyanne Tomasula of Rider since 2010, in her victory.
On the boards the Dragons swept all four events. Madison Kramer won both the one and three-meter dives and David Sanchez took home both events on the men's side.
In the men's 500-yard freestyle the Dragons finished first and second thanks to Ted Taylor and Matthew Klotz. In the women's race the Dragons did one better, sweeping the podium, with Miranda Rouse, Emily Joyce and Aubrey Murray finishing one, two and three. Drexel also took wins in both the men's and women's 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Dragons also finished 1-2 in the men's; 100 and 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle and in the women's; 100-yard backstroke and 1000-yard freestyle.
