New Hampshire Holds Off Women's Lacrosse, 12-8

PHILADELPHIA - Less than five minutes into their game on Sunday afternoon against New Hampshire, the Drexel women's lacrosse team held a 2-0 lead. That evaporated with a scoreless drought that lasted exactly 20 minutes, however, as the Dragons allowed five-straight New Hampshire goals and never made up the difference, falling to the Wildcats 12-8.
The loss was the second in the row for the Dragons (4-5), who had not played in eight days coming into Sunday's action. New Hampshire evened its record at 5-5.
Things got off to a promising start for the Dragons. Just over a minute into the action, faceoff specialist Milan White attacked the goal and fired in on Wildcat goalie Taylor Hurwitz. Hurwitz made the save, but White had backed her down so much that Hurwitz was positioned inside the goal mouth, meaning the goal counted.
With 26:33 to play, Kelly Palace ripped her team-leading 17th goal of the season, beating Hurwitz high and right to put the Dragons ahead 2-0. That would prove to be the last Drexel goal for exactly 20 minutes. Just over nine minutes into the game, New Hampshire had evened things up at 2-2. Five minutes later, Molly Gaffey's goal started a quick barrage of three goals in 2:36 for the Wildcats, leaving them on top, 5-2.
Freshman Eva Winiarski, making her first collegiate start, got Drexel back on the board with 6:33 remaining in the first half with her fifth goal of the year, fed by an assist from senior Amanda Norcini. New Hampshire got that back three minutes later, and scored two pivotal goals in the final minute of the first half, turning a three-goal edge into a commanding 8-3 advantage heading into the intermission.
White opened the scoring in the second half with a free position goal at the 27:22 mark, her second of the day. It was her first-career multi-goal game. The Wildcats responded with two more goals before Alissa Watts netted a free position score for her first goal of the game.
The Dragons would score the game's final three goals over the last 12:09, but New Hampshire's pressuring defense and strong ball movement on offense kept Drexel off balance just enough to keep the Dragons from mounting a serious comeback attempt.
Drexel will get back in action on Wednesday when the Dragons visit Penn State. That game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
