PHILADELPHIA — The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell to Temple, 11-6, in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon at Howarth Field. Lucy Dailey matched a career-high 11 saves in goal, as the Dragons moved to 5-10 on the season.
The Owls struck first in the opening minute of play. Drexel controlled the opening draw but turned it over, leading to a free-position goal. A failed clear resulted in another score at the 3:54 mark, extending the lead to 2-0. Bea Buckley got the Dragons on the board, cutting the deficit in half by rolling around the net, selling the fake pass, and curling it in.
The Dragons came out strong in the second quarter, as Kate Quinn converted on a free-position opportunity to tie the game. Temple answered with three straight goals in a 2:46 stretch to build a 5-2 advantage. Mary Claire Heubeck helped stop the run midway through the quarter, but the Owls responded with another score to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
The third quarter featured just one goal, with Temple scoring at the six-minute mark to push its lead to four. The Owls held the Dragons scoreless for more than 24 minutes before Drexel broke through early in the fourth, as Quinn finished a flip pass from Elena Bontatibus.
Temple's offense came alive at the 12:43 mark, scoring four straight in just over five minutes to take a commanding 11-4 lead. The Dragons added two late goals, including Alexys McClain's first career tally, but Drexel couldn't close the gap as the Owls secured the win.
The Dragons head south for their regular-season finale on Saturday against Campbell, as Drexel looks to secure a berth in the CAA Playoffs. Opening draw from Buies Creek, N.C. is set for 12 p.m.
