PHILADELPHIA – Drexel men's tennis finished in third place at the Philly Six Invitational after beating Temple, 4-1, on Saturday evening at Penn. This was the Dragons' third straight win over the Owls.
The Dragons fell to Penn in the morning's semifinal, 5-0, which landed them in the third-place match later in the day. They are now 4-1 on the young season.
"This tournament is a good kick-off weekend for our season," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "There were a lot of matches we needed to get back into match mode and build up confidence early in the season. We are also excited to play fellow City Six teams Villanova and Saint Joseph's in a few weeks."
In the third-place match, Drexel's toughness showed through as the team went on to battle through close sets and matches. Dan Koehler and Kashyap Ashok teamed up to win the Dragons the doubles point, 6-4.
In singles play, Badr Ouabdelmoumen worked his way through a three-set battle, coming out on top after dropping the first set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. After a strong showing in his match against Penn, Xabier Saavedra fell in the second position, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Alex Fioravante and Hamza Laalej got the Dragons back on track and ultimately the overall match victory. Fioravante pulled out a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (5) win, while Laalej battled back from down one set to win, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
The Dragons began the day with a tough 5-0 loss in their semifinal match-up with Penn on Saturday morning. First, Koehler and Daniel Hansen paired up for the doubles point, but fell 6-3, 6-4. In singles, Ouabdelmoumen was bested 6-0, 6-4, and Saavedra wouldn't go down without a fight but dropped his match 6-3, 6-4. With the match in the Quakers' grasp, Fioravante and Laalej took a shot at getting the Dragons on the board, but both ultimately fell, 6-2, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-3, respectively.
Drexel beat La Salle on Friday to advance to play Penn in the semifinals.
Drexel Tennis returns to the court on Sunday at the Drexel Armory against St. Francis (N.Y.). The women play at 10 a.m. and the men follow at 1 p.m.
