No. 10 Maryland Handles Drexel, 12-3

Maryland's defense held Drexel without a goal for a span of more a span of more than 56 minutes as the 10th-ranked Terrapins defeated Drexel, 12-3, in College Park on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons fell to 0-4 with the loss, while Maryland improved to 3-1.
The Dragons jumped out to a quick lead, scoring two goals before three minutes elapsed in the game. Joe Rainoldi opened the scoring at the 12:56 mark when he put home a feed from Robert Frazee. The Dragons' Nick Saputo won the ensuing face-off and just 30 seconds later, sophomore Cole Shafer set up Mitch de Snoo for a goal, making it 2-0 Drexel.
That would be the last Drexel goal for quite some time. The Dragons would be held off the board until the final minutes of the game.
Maryland got on the board after a slashing penalty to Miles Thomas. Matt Rambo converted on the man-up with 3:02 left in the quarter, making it a 2-1 game. That score would stand as the first quarter ended. Rambo's goal started a string of seven straight goals for the Terrapins as they took control of the game. Bryan Cole evened the score in the first minute of the second quarter. Jay Carlson then took over, scoring three straight, including two in the second period as Maryland went to intermission with a 4-2 lead.
The lead extended to six by the end of the third quarter. Carlson started the third by completing the hat trick. Joe LoCascio found the net twice, sandwiched around a Connor Kelly goal, as the Terrapins dominated play in the third. LoCascio's second of the period came with just two seconds to go.
In the fourth quarter, the Terrapins' continued the onslaught, scoring the first four goals of the final period. The Dragons finally broke the drought when Jake Gonzalez scored an unassisted goal with just 1:10 to go in the game.
Maryland outshot Drexel, 44-26, in the game. The Terrapins forced Drexel into 22 turnovers and held the Dragons to their lowest scoring output since April of 2009, when Towson defeated DU, 10-2. Drexel won 11 of 18 face-offs, including nine of 16 taken by Nick Saputo. The senior also had eight ground balls.
Carlson led Maryland with four points. Rambo and LoCascio each finished with a pair of goals. Kyle Bernlohr wasn't tested often in the cage, but when he was he came up with the stops. He finished with 11 saves and allowed just two goals in 53 minutes before getting the rest of the afternoon off. Will Gabrielsen made 12 saves in a losing cause for the Dragons.
Drexel will return home and be back in action on Tuesday evening. The Dragons host Saint Joseph's in a non-league game at Vidas Field beginning at 5 p.m.
