Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Drexel Past Binghamton, 9-5

Philadelphia, Pa. – T.J. Foley and Michael Kay each scored a pair of goals as Drexel used a balanced offensive attack to defeat Binghamton, 9-5, in a non-conference game at Vidas Field. Foley, who entered the game without a goal, found the back of the net twice on the man-up as the Dragons improved their record to 4-5.

The Dragons controlled play for most of the game but Binghamton (2-5) remained in striking distance for most of the game. Foley's second goal of the game midway through the fourth period put Drexel ahead by three. Kay followed minutes later to make it 9-5 as the Dragons won for the fourth time in the last five games. Belka, who finished the day with three assists and four points, set up the last two Dragons' goals.

Drexel outshot the visitors, 45-25, and committed a season-low eight turnovers. Binghamton's Tanner Cosens kept the Bearcats close as he came up with 13 saves in the contest. Drexel's defense allowed just five goals, the lowest total allowed in almost two years. Jimmy Joe Granito had seven saves for Drexel, including three in the final quarter.

Seven different Dragons scored the first seven goals of the game as Drexel held the lead for most of the game. The Bearcats opened the scoring in the opening minutes when Sean Gilroy scored the first of his two goals. The Drexel defense would hold the Bearcats for a stretch of almost 17 minutes after that. During that time, Drexel scored four times to take the lead for good. Kay tied the game at 1-1 when his shot from straight on 10 yards out beat Tanner Cosens with 3:39 to go in the first period.

In the second period, Belka put the Dragons ahead 2-1 when he dodged in on the left and scored on the short side. A minute later, freshman defender Michael Meurer caused a turnover, picked up the loose ball and took off for the Binghamton end. He fed Kyle Strang in front, and the freshman fired a shot home in transition. Foley's first goal of the year on the man-up made it 4-1 before Binghamton broke the stretch with a man-up goal from Paul O'Donnell. Binghamton's Zachary Scaduto got the Bearcats to within a goal at 4-3 with just 4:41 to go. Binghamton's momentum didn't last long as Cole Shafer took a nice feed in front from Jules Raucci and scored from in close at the 3:12 mark to put the Dragons ahead 5-3. Shafer's 18^th goal of the year would be the last goal of the half.

Drexel is back in action on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. The Dragons begin Colonial Athletic Association play when Fairfield comes to West Philadelphia. It will be the first CAA game for Fairfield, who moved into the conference at the end of last season.
