Philadelphia - The Drexel men's lacrosse team begins Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon when Fairfield makes its first visit to Vidas Field as a CAA member. The Dragons have won three of their last four games heading into conference play, including a 9-5 win against Binghamton on Tuesday evening.
Drexel, now 4-5 overall, had seven different players score goals in the win against Binghamton. The Dragons got a pair of goals from two unlikely sources as both T.J. Foley and Michael Kay scored twice. Foley's goals were his first two of the season, both of them coming on the man-up. His second goal of the game midway through the fourth period put Drexel ahead by three and gave the Dragons some breathing room. Kay followed minutes later to make it 9-5. Ryan Belka, who finished the day with three assists and four points, set up the last two Dragons' goals.
Belka's outstanding season continued with the four points on Tuesday. He now has 18 goals and 15 assists for 33 points. The senior is second in the CAA with 3.67 points per game, trailing only Sam Llinares of Hofstra. Belka and Cole Shafer are both tied for sixth in the CAA with 18 goals (2.0 per game). Jules Raucci, Mason Pynn and Robert Frazee each average at least one goal per game. The defense has played well as of late, holding four of its last five opponents to eight goals or less. The five goals given up on Tuesday was the team's lowest total allowed in almost two years. Miles Thomas and Jake Kiernan have each caused 10 turnovers, while Jimmy Joe Granito has a .521 save percentage and has won four of his five decisions in the cage.
Fairfield begins action this weekend with a 5-4 record. The Stags have won three straight games, including a convincing 11-4 win against No. 20 Villanova. During their win streak, the Stags have also beaten Colgate and UMass Lowell. Fairfield averages 10.56 goals per game and has four players who already have at least 10 goals. T.J. Neubauer leads the way with 19 goals, the fifth-highest total in the league at 2.11 per game. Tristan Sperry has 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists) to lead the team. Charlie Schnider (13) and Jake Knostman (10) have also reached double figures in scoring. Tyler Behring has started in the cage in each of the last two games and has two wins.
