PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Tennis capped its 2014-15 season continuing the theme of success that has been constant throughout the season. The Dragons defeated Delaware 7-0 in women's play and 6-1 in men's play on Senior Day Sunday at Vidas Courts.
Drexel's men finish the regular season 12-9 overall, a program best for single season wins as well. The win pushes Drexel's women to 15-2 on the year, giving the team its first 15-win season in program history.
Head coach Mehdi Rhazali and Drexel Tennis honored six seniors prior to the match. Alex Fioravante, Daniel Hansen, Dan Koehler, Aysenil Ohron, Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Nicole Pivonka were presented with Senior Day gifts for their contributions to the program over the past few years. The seniors did not disappoint either. Fioravante, Koehler, Ouabdelmoumen and Pivonka all picked up singles victories in their final match at Vidas, while Hansen and Ouabdelmoumen grabbed a doubles win together for the 11th time this year.
"We played hard and we learned for our mistakes," Rhazali said. "We played smart, fought for every point and our body language was on point. We are happy with how things turned out for us this year.
"Now we need to focus harder, practice smart for CAAs and stay humble and true to ourselves."
On the men's side, the Dragons swept doubles play and carried the confidence into winning five of the six singles matches. Fioravante and Xabier Saavedra started the Dragons off with an 8-4 win at No. 1. Kashyap Ashok and Koehler as well as Ouabdelmoumen and Hansen followed it up with respective 8-6 victories of their own.
In singles, Drexel jumped on Delaware early and did not let up. Fioravante was the first to finish, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Ouabdelmoumen and Saavedra sealed the overall Dragons win with respective victories of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3. Hamza Laalej and Koehler added victories on the back end, 6-5, 7-5 and 6-3, 6-1, respectively.
On the women's side, Drexel jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back, winning a hard-fought doubles point before sweeping singles play. Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence cruised to an 8-1 win to get the Blue and Gold started. Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez Cruz at No. 1 and Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch at No. 3 were locked in tight battles for the point. Winkler and Bunch took it home with an 8-7 win in a tiebreak, while Pivonka and Rodriguez Cruz suffered a rare defeat.
In singles, Drexel carried the momentum of winning the doubles point to sweep across the board. Pivonka, Rodriguez Cruz, Winkler and Providence all coasted to victories. Bowsher forced three sets after dropping the first set, winning the third in a tiebreak, 10-8. Fiorella Coria received a default victory at No. 6. Pivonka finishes the regular season an 11-4 record from the top singles spot, while her doubles partner Rodriguez Cruz improved to 18-4 in her freshman campaign.
Drexel Tennis now heads to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The men and women will compete in Williamsburg, Va. beginning on Thursday and running through the weekend.
