Women's Lacrosse Slowed By Delaware, 9-6

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team wrapped up its home schedule on Sunday as the Dragons fell to Delaware at Vidas Field, 9-6. Drexel started the game off with superb defensive intensity and took a 2-0 lead, but suffered from a scoring drought of more than 25 minutes as Delaware pulled ahead and did not look back.
Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Devin Nihill each scored twice for Drexel. For Pelham-Lacey, it was her third straight game with multiple goals, and fourth such game this season. Nihill netted her third multi-goal game of the year and first since Feb. 25. Alissa Watts and Emily Kellett added scores while three different Dragons registered assists. Madeline DiBrino had a pair of draw controls and Teresha Bradley finished with eight saves.
The Dragons stifled Delaware early on, turning up the defensive pressure and making the Blue Hens work just to get a shot off. Delaware did not score over the first 20:30 of the game. Meanwhile, the Dragons took a 2-0 lead on goals from Pelham-Lacey and Nihill. Emily Duffey assisted on Pelham-Lacey's goal, and Caroline Thiele helped out on Nihill's. The second goal was particularly impressive, as Thiele fed Nihill from behind the net, and Nihill finished it off with a strong overhand shot to beat the Blue Hens' goalkeeper, Alex Zaugra. Zaugra finished without a save in the game, though that was largely a result of Drexel's inability to get shots on net until late in the second half.
Trailing 2-0, Delaware finally got on the board with 9:30 remaining in the first half. The first of two goals and four points for Jamie Schwartz started a 6-0 Delaware run which left the Dragons without a goal for the final 12:45 of the first half and the open ing 12:52 of the second. Down 6-2, the Dragons found paydirt with 17:08 to play when Pelham-Lacey broke free for an unassisted goal, making it 6-3.
The Dragons crawled back within two when Nihill converted a free position opportunity with 15:47 to play. That would be as close as they would get over the remainder of the game, however, as the Dragons struggled to win draw controls. They won just six of 17 draws on the afternoon. Delaware controlled possession down the stretch, and while Watts made it an 8-5 game with her free position goal at the 6:17 mark, the Dragons couldn't continue that momentum and remained winless in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Drexel's home schedule is now behind it, but the Dragons will get back to work a week from Sunday as they visit Elon for the first time as conference mates. That game is set to get underway at 1:00 p.m.
