ELON, N.C. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team captured its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season on Sunday as the Dragons visited Elon and defeated the Phoenix in the first-ever matchup between the new conference foes, 10-7. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Dragons as they broke out for double digit goals for the first time since their 12-10 win over La Salle on March 25.
Nadia Pelham-Lacey netted her second hat trick in three games to lead the way for the Dragons. Pelham-Lacey now has 15 goals on the season and 10 over the last four games, all in CAA play. Caroline Thiele scored twice and added an assist for Drexel, while Emily Duffey and Lacey Aghazarian each also netted two goals. Alissa Watts scored a goal and won three draws to lead the team as the Dragons edged Elon in that category, 10-9. Teresha Bradley came up with nine saves in net for the Dragons, holding off the Phoenix as they came within a goal late in the second half.
The Phoenix got on the board first, scoring just 53 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. That edge would be short-lived, though, as the Dragons responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. Nadia Pelham-Lacey got the first score of the day for Drexel, following just over a minute after Elon's goal. Caroline Thiele netted her first five minutes later, and Pelham-Lacey's second score of the afternoon came at the 19:44 mark as she rifled one past Elon goalkeeper Rachel Ramirez.
After Elon responded with a pair of goals to even things up at 3-3, Drexel netted three straight to take a 6-3 lead into the halftime break. First, Thiele scored her second of the day at the 8:44 mark. After not scoring a goal all season until April 10, Thiele now has multi-goal games in two of the Dragons' last three contests. Alissa Watts fired home her sixth goal of the season with 5:40 to play in the first half, and Lacey Aghazarian netted her team-leading 18th goal of the year with just under a minute to play in the opening period.
It did not take long for Elon to get back in it. Less than two minutes into the second half, the Phoenix had two goals and was back within a goal at 6-5. Stephanie Asher had both scores for Elon. Emily Duffey got Drexel back on the board at the 26:57 mark, but the Phoenix answered right back three minutes later to make it a 7-6 game.
With 21:14 to play, Duffey got her second goal of the contest, one that would ultimately prove to be the game-winner as she took a feed from Thiele and converted her 13th goal of the year. Elon made it 8-7 with 12:54 to play when Abby Godfey scored her second of the day, but Drexel composed itself and finally broke through for a big insurance goal when Pelham-Lacey netted her third of the day with 4:22 remaining. Aghazarian would add one more for good measure at the 2:51 mark as the Dragons held Elon scoreless over the last 12:54.
The Dragons will conclude their season next Saturday when they visit first-place Hofstra at 1:00 p.m.
