Women's Lacrosse Drops CAA Opener, 10-5 to William and Mary
4/3/2015 8:40:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell in its conference opener on Friday night, 10-5 to William & Mary at Vidas Field. The Dragons scored early and played strong defense throughout, but could not keep the offensive pressure up as the Tribe pulled ahead late in the first half and did not look back.
Emily Duffey had three goals and an assist to lead the Dragons. Joelle Hartke added two goals, while Emily Kellett had an assist. Teresha Bradley had 10 saves in goal, and Jocelyn Quaile had a game-high three caused turnovers.
The Dragons got on the board first, scoring 5:33 into the contest when Emily Duffey netted her first of the night. After the Tribe had an answer, Drexel made it a 2-1 game when Duffey took a feed from Emily Kellett from behind the net, ripping an overhand shot straight down into the net with 22:26 remaining before intermission.
William & Mary shut the Dragons down for nearly the rest of the half, scoring four goals to take a 5-2 lead before Joelle Hartke wrapped around and scored with 18 seconds remaining to cut the Tribe's lead to two.
The second half was a defensive struggle to start, with neither team able to light up the scoreboard for nearly 10 minutes. With 20:20 remaining, the Tribe's Danielle Palmucci scored to make it a 6-3 game. Duffey and the Dragons responded three minutes later, completing a hat trick to pull the Dragons back within two at 6-4.
That would be as close as the Dragons would get, as William & Mary scored three in a row and kept Drexel off the scoreboard until Duffey, taking the ball on off a foul from just outside the arc, found a cutting Hartke to make it 9-5. William & Mary added another score with 1:18 remaining to complete the scoring.
The Tribe won thanks in large part to controlling the draw controls and possessions. William & Mary won 11 of 17 draws on the evening. The Tribe got goal scoring from nine different players, including two goals from Michelle Goss.
The Dragons will be back in action on Sunday when they host James Madison on Easter Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Dukes come into the contest ranked No. 14 in the nation.
