PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell behind early and could not dig out of the hole as the Dragons fell to No. 14 James Madison, 17-9. Drexel allowed the Dukes to score the first seven goals of the game before the Dragons responded with four straight, but James Madison was able to hold the Dragons at bay the rest of the afternoon.
Lacey Aghazarian, Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Emily Duffey each scored twice for the Dragons. Ashley Bupp added a goal and an assist. Eva Winiarski had a game-high four caused turnovers to help the Dragons slow the James Madison attack after the Dukes' quick start. Jaci Gordon had four goals and two other Dukes had hat tricks to help lead the James Madison attack.
James Madison got its offense going right out of the gate, scoring four times in the first 4:43 of the contest. The Dukes would add three more goals, taking a 7-0 lead when Stephanie Finley scored at the 16:55 mark of the first half.
Down by seven early, the Dragons quickly fought their way back into it. First, Emily Duffey converted a free position attempt with 13:52 left on the clock. Drexel would score twice more over the next 1:20 of play as they began to even up the draw control battle and find opportunities. Lacey Aghazarian also netted a free position, while Nadia Pelham-Lacey wrapped around for an unassisted goal. The Dragons made it four in a row when Milan White scored off an eight-meter play at the 11:11 mark, forcing the Dukes to call a timeout.
The Dragons' run stopped there, with James Madison scoring three times in 1:02 to rebuild a six-goal lead. A frenetic first half saw Ashley Bupp net her second goal of the season and Pelham-Lacey score another before the Dukes closed out the first half scoring with Gordon's fourth goal of the stanza. James Madison took an 11-6 lead into intermission, and added two more to start the second half.
Emily Duffey ended Drexel's drought with 21:31 remaining in the contest, 15:55 after Pelham-Lacey had scored the Dragons' last goal. A little over three minutes later, Alissa Watts finished a free position attempt, pulling the Dragons back within five at 13-8 with 17:41 remaining.
James Madison would end any hopes of a Drexel comeback with four more goals over the next 13 minutes, giving the Dukes as much as a nine-goal lead. Aghazarian scored off a feed from Bupp with 1:18 remaining, but it was too late to mount any more of a charge as the Dragons fell for a second straight game.
Drexel will now hit the road after going 2-3 on a five-game homestand. The Dragons' next contest will be at Towson on Friday, the team's first conference road game of the season. That game is set to get underway at 6:00 p.m.
