Philadelphia - Junior Aaron Fricke sank a 20-foot chip in sudden death as Drexel defeated Fairleigh Dickinson at the Explorer Match Play Championship. The tournament was hosted by La Salle at North Hills Country Club.
Fricke and FDU's U Minn Woo battled in the playoff as darkness more than settled down on the Glenside, Pa. course. It looked as though the tournament would be declared a tie as the teams agreed to end play after one playoff hole due to darkness. Fricke did not let that happen. With a tractor providing limited lighting, the Denver, Pa. native calmly rolled his chip up and in to give Drexel an emotional win after a long day of golf.
Fricke took the first win for the Dragons at 3&2 and freshman Connor Schmidt was victorious at two-up. Senior Yoseph Dance had perhaps the most exciting match of the championship. He went back and forth almost the entire 18 holes as both players birdied on multiple occasions. Dance ended halving the whole. FDU needed to win its final two pairings to force the tie and the Knights did just that, sending the two teams to sudden death.
The Dragons started the day by facing the host Explorers in match play. Fricke easily won his match (7&5), while both Adam Mistretta (4&3) and Brendan Bacskai (3&2) were also winners for DU, who advanced with a 3-2 win. Drexel entered the semifinal as the third seed after its third place finish in the opening stroke round on Monday. Adam Mistretta led the way for Drexel by firing a three-over-par 145 to finish third overall.
It was the second straight tournament that the Dragons tied for the top spot. Last week at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational, the team set a school-record with an 11-under-par performance. Drexel tied with Saint Bonavanture, but the Bonnies won the tiebreaker, which was decided by the score of the fifth player for each team. Drexel shot a 565 at the tournament, setting a mark for the best 36-hole score in program history.
