ORLANDO – The Drexel softball team defeated Rider, 5-0 in its first game of the final day of competition at the Rebel Classic, but then fell to Bucknell by a 10-1 deficit in their last game. On the whole, the Dragons went 5-5 at the tournament and move to 10-8 on the year.
Against Rider, Ellen Scott went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI, while each Paula Ueno and Savanna Johnson went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Drexel got on the board early in the first game as Scott singled to left field to drive Ueno in with two outs in the top of the first. Scott would give the Dragons another run in the top of the third with a double down the left field line that brought pinch runner Erin Okoniewski around from second. Then with one out and runners on second and third, Jourdan Skirha laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Kristi Uyesaka and gave the Dragons a 3-0 lead.
Drexel extended its advantage in the top of the seventh, as Baeley Reed and Johnson started the inning off with back to back singles. Ueno advanced the runners with a groundout to third base and then Samantha Asbra added a bunt single to bring Reed across the plate. In the next at-bat, Scott followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought Johnson home and made it a 5-0 game.
Tara Konopka picked up her fourth win of the season after she pitched a complete game and totaled nine strikeouts while allowing only four hits.
Against Bucknell, Scott went 1-for-2 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Ueno also went 1-for-2 and scored Drexel's lone run of the outing.
The Dragons put a run on the board in the sixth inning to make it a 4-1 game, but then ran out of gas in the seventh as the Bison scored six runs to solidify their 10-1 victory. Katie Haley was credited with the loss, her second of the season.
Returning home, the Dragons will have the upcoming week off for finals but then will return to action beginning Tuesday, March 22 as they open a nine-game road trip to Virginia and North Carolina. Drexel will play games against Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, and UNC Greensboro during the week before it opens conference plan at Elon on Saturday, March 26.
