Norfolk State got on the board first in game one with a two-run home run from Whitney Williams in the bottom of the first. The Dragons came right back in the top of the second, however, and tied it up at 2-2 as Jenelle Ladrido singled up the middle with one out and the bases loaded. Savanna Johnson followed in the next at bat with a single through the left side that brought another two runs across the plate and gave Drexel a 4-2 lead.
The Dragons would extend their lead with a six-run top of the fourth. Gabriela Kuroda crossed the plate on a throwing error to make it a 5-2 game and then Kimberly Chan singled through the right side to bring two more runs home. A one-out double from Ellen Scott made it 9-2 and then Samantha Asbra followed with a double to left center to give the Dragons a 10-2 advantage by the end of the inning.
The Spartans were at risk of being run-ruled with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Seana Moriarty came to the plate and kept Norfolk State alive as she singled home a run to make it a 10-3 game.
The Dragons, however, would put another three runs on the board in the top of the sixth to extend their lead yet again and put the mercy rule back in place. Paula Ueno and Scott started the sixth with back-to-back solo home runs to put Drexel ahead, 12-3. Kuroda would go on to knock in the Dragons' final run with an RBI double to make it a 13-3 margin. The Drexel defense was able to hold off the Spartans in the bottom of the sixth and the mercy rule was enforced, which gave the Dragons the victory after six innings.
Katie Haley was credited with the win for game one after coming in in the third inning to relieve Taylor L. Lee. The pitchers each tossed three strikeouts and allowed only two hits apiece.
In the second game, Norfolk State put up four runs in the first inning and then held a 4-0 lead into the third inning. It was then that the Dragons got on the board, as Chan put the ball in play with the bases loaded to get things started and bring Erin Okoniewski across the plate. A sacrifice fly from Ueno brought in the next at bat brought another run home and then Asbra brought Johnson around the bases with an RBI single up the middle to make it a 4-3 game.
The Dragons would trail by one run until the top of the sixth, when errors on the part of the Spartans would give Drexel the opportunity to post three runs and take a 6-4 lead. Norfolk State got one run back with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Tara Konopka was able to force a pop up to limit the damage and walk away with a victory.
The win marks Konopka's fifth of the season. She threw eight strikeouts in the winning effort.
The Dragons improve to 12-8 overall with the victories. Next up, Drexel will head to Greensboro, N.C. where it will face North Carolina A&T in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
