Women's Lacrosse Held Down in Second Half in 8-4 Loss to Elon
4/22/2016 9:42:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team held a two-goal lead at halftime on Friday night against Elon, but saw it slip away as the Dragons were held scoreless in the second half and the Phoenix scored six unanswered goals to grab an 8-4 road victory. Drexel will now have one game remaining this season with an opportunity to earn a bid to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, which the Dragons will be hosting.
The Dragons opened the scoring when Lauren Gerrie netted her 13th of the season just 3:39 into the contest. Devin Nihill fired on Elon goalkeeper Rachel Ramirez, who stopped it but could not control the rebound. It went straight to Gerrie, who picked it up and poked it right past Ramirez.
After Elon tied it up, Emily Duffey found a corner and got inside, beating Ramirez one-on-one to put the Dragons back on top. The Phoenix once again had an answer, scoring with 19:08 to play in the first half.
That would be the last time the Phoenix lit up the scoreboard in the opening half. Drexel's defense held strong with Carlee Ries coming up with a pair of saves on free position attempts as well as a stop on a rebound the likes of which had beaten Ramirez earlier in the half. The Dragons held the ball on the offensive end for the majority of the rest of the half. Grace Osterdale wasted little time putting the Dragons back on top, netting her fourth of the year with 16:48 to play before halftime. After an extended possession, Lacey Aghazarian fed a cutting Gerrie for her second of the evening to make it 4-2 with 6:36 remaining before halftime, providing the intermission margin.
It was a different story after halftime. Elon won four faceoffs in the second half and did not allow the Dragons to score. Drexel allowed three free position goals while finding itself unable to convert on any of its five free position chances on the evening. Meanwhile, the Dragons were charged with six yellow cards, five of which came in the second half. That forced the Dragons to stay on the defensive for much of the period and kept them from getting significant pressure until it was too late.
The Dragons will host Hofstra on Saturday, Apr. 30 in the regular season finale. That game, which will be preceded by the Dragons' annual Senior Day ceremony, will begin at 4:00 p.m.
