Softball Falls to Saint Joseph's, 12-2

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team fell to Saint Joseph's, 12-2 in five innings on Wednesday afternoon. Kai Uyesaka hit her first career home run and Paula Ueno secured her 100th career hit in the losing effort.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead with seven runs scored in the top of the first inning. Saint Joseph's was already up 4-0 when pitcher Ashley Ventura sent a three-run home run over the fence in left field to make it 7-0.
The Dragons got two runs back in the bottom of the inning as Vanessa Lightfoot drew a walk and then with two outs Uyesaka retaliated with a two-run homer to left field, the first of her career.
Saint Joseph's extended its advantage to 8-2 as Taryn Grober singled to center field. The Hawks would go on to hold this lead through four innings.
In the top of the fifth, Saint Joseph's would cement its victory by adding four more runs to go ahead, 12-2. The Dragons would not be able to score in the bottom of the inning, which put the mercy rule in place and gave the Hawks the victory.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 16-19 on the season, while Saint Joseph's improves to 12-14-1 overall.
Drexel returns to action this weekend as it is set to open its home conference schedule against Towson.
