PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team fought to a scoreless draw against University City rival Penn at Rhodes Field on Sunday evening.
Both teams had chances throughout the competition, but after 110 minutes of play the University City neighbors each walked away with their first tie of the season.
The Dragons and Quakers were fairly even through regulation, with Drexel getting off 10 shots to Penn's nine. With seven minutes to play in the second half, Drexel had its best shot to break the tie as Vanessa Kara and Madison Dunn combined for three shots in less than a minute. The first two shots were blocked by the Penn defense, but the third came as a dangerous shot off the foot of Dunn that was pushed away by Quakers' keeper Kitty Qu.
Penn had a strong chance to take home the win to start the first overtime period as a shot from Sasha Stephens found the crossbar in the first minute. The Dragons then had their own chance at victory in the second overtime as Kara was able to take two strong shots on goal in the final minute. The first found the crossbar and the second was pulled down by Qu with eight seconds to play.
The Dragons and Quakers each totaled 12 shots apiece in the draw. Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded seven saves in the outing, which marked her fourth shutout of the season. Penn's Qu tallied six, while the Quakers' defense added one of its own.
The tie moves the Dragons to 4-4-1 on the season, while the Quakers move to 4-1-1.
Drexel returns home to Vidas Field this Friday as the Dragons will open conference play against the Hofstra Pride at 7:30 p.m.
