PHILADELPHIA – In the Drexel women's lacrosse home opener, the Dragons (1-1) used a strong offensive first half to push past the Columbia Lions (0-1) to capture their first win of the season from Vidas Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Drexel jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Columbia scored the next three goals but the 8-4 margin would be the closest it would get.
Senior Devin Nihill led the squad with four goals while junior Nadia Pelham-Lacey and graduate transfer Lisa Rogers each added three more. Nihill and Pelham-Lacey led the team with five points on the day.
Pelham-Lacey started the scoring with an unassisted goal 1:20 into the contest. Columbia quickly tied it up before the Dragons scored the next seven to widen the lead. Nihill and Caroline Thiele each added two while Pelham-Lacey scored her second to go along with goals from Alex Beilman and Rogers.
Columbia ended the first half with a three-goal run including a goal from Sara Ruzzi with 1.1 seconds left to make it 8-4 Drexel at the break.
Nihill notched her third and fourth goals of the afternoon at the beginning of the second half before Rogers scored on an advantage to take it back to a seven-goal edge in favor of the Dragons.
Rogers and Pelham-Lacey inked their hat tricks late in the tilt. Lauren Gerrie also scored her second of the season in the final five minutes.
In total, Drexel led draw controls, 16-7, and shots, 30-17, helping the Dragons to control the tempo of the Sunday affair.
Drexel returns to action on the road in Washington, D.C. against American on Saturday, Feb. 25 followed by a midweek game with Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. on Wednesday, March 1.
