Comeback Falls Short for Women's Lacrosse, 11-10 vs. High Point
3/26/2017 2:23:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
PHILADELPHIA - Trailing by five with just under 12 minutes to go, the Drexel women's lacrosse team cut the High Point deficit to one, but could not come up with the plays they needed to even things up as the Dragons fell, 11-10. Drexel got four goals in the span of 7:02, including three from Lauren Gerrie, to claw back in a game that the Panthers had led 10-5. After High Point got an insurance goal with 3:38 to play, the Dragons scored again and had the ball with a chance to tie, but could not cap the comeback.
Gerrie finished with a career high five goals and five points in the losing effort. Four of her goals were assisted by Caroline Thiele, who also set a personal best with six points, including a goal and five assists. Thiele's five assists also matched a program record, done two times previously and not since the 2007 season. Lisa Rogers scored twice with an assist and Nadia Pelham-Lacey and Alex Beilman each contributed a goal for the Dragons (4-4). For Pelham-Lacey, the goal marked her 100th career point.
Senior goalkeeper Carlee Ries also had a career high in the game, making 13 saves. She had eight saves in the first half as the Panthers controlled possession for much of that period, then added five more in the second as the Dragons began to mount a comeback. Ries also had four ground balls and a caused turnover. Eva Winiarski finished with three caused turnovers and four draw controls, while Lindsay Shettle had two caused turnovers and a draw. Devin Nihill also caused a pair of turnovers and picked up three ground balls.
Drexel allowed High Point to net the game's first two goals, but then quickly grabbed momentum early. Thiele scored with 26:32 to play in the opening half, getting the Dragons on the board, and Pelham-Lacey knotted things up when she finished a feed from Rogers just 90 seconds later. Then with 21:38 to play, Gerrie netted her first of the game to give Drexel what would turn out to be its only lead of the afternoon, 3-2.
That would be the Dragons' final goal for nearly 25 minutes of game time as the Panthers scored the last four goals of the first half to take a 6-3 lead into the break. Samantha Brown had a hat trick before the break and finished the afternoon with three goals and three assists. Brooke Stevens had two first-half goals and finished with five.
Those four goals to end the half were part of a larger 7-2 run that allowed High Point to take control of the game. The run was broken up by goals from Rogers and Beilman early in the second half, but the Dragons nonetheless found themselves down 10-5 with 21:01 to play.
After neither team scored for almost 10 minutes, Gerrie and Thiele connected for the first time with 11:38 to play to end Drexel's drought and make it a four-goal game. The same duo hooked up with 8:04 remaining to pull the Dragons within three, 10-7.
Rogers' second goal of the game came with 6:26 to play, cutting the High Point lead to 10-8. Then, with 4:36 to play, Thiele fed Gerrie for a third time in seven minutes to get Drexel back within one.
High Point won a much-needed draw and scored an insurance goal with 3:38 to play, Darla Poulin's second of the afternoon which proved to be the game-winner. The Dragons would get the ball back, though, and the pairing of Thiele and Gerrie connected one final time with 2:20 to play, making it an 11-10 game.
The Dragons could not win the ensuing draw, but did force a quick turnover to get the ball back with time to score a game-tying goal. Unfortunately, they could not maintain possession either, and gave up the first of two costly turnovers in the final minutes that prevented them from getting a shot off.
Drexel will return to Vidas Field on Wednesday afternoon when the Dragons host Penn State at 4:00 p.m.
