PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Penn State at Vidas Field on Wednesday afternoon, 15-6. The loss dropped the Dragons to 4-5 on the season, while Penn State improved to 11-1.
Lauren Gerrie and Devin Nihill each scored a pair of goals in the loss for the Dragons. Drexel allowed the first five goals of the game and could not recover as the Nittany Lions pulled away for the victory. Sigourney Heerink allowed three goals while saving six in the second half.
Caroline Cummings scored the first goal of her collegiate career to get Drexel on the board midway through the first half after Penn State had scored the first five goals of the game. After the Nittany Lions scored twice more to make it 7-1, Alex Beilman found Lauren Gerrie in front of the net for her 13th goal of the season and sixth in the last two games. Less than three minutes later, Caroline Thiele, who tied a program record for assists in a single game on Sunday, fed Devin Nihill for her first goal of the game, making it an 8-3 contest.
That would be the last goal Drexel would score for just over 28 minutes of game time as Penn State once again scored five in a row spanning the end of the first half and beginning of the second. Courtney Dietzel's second goal of the season broke the skid with 11:47 to play, cutting the deficit to 13-4 at the time. The teams traded goals from there, with Nadia Pelham-Lacey helping on Gerrie's second goal of the game at the 7;48 mark and Devin Nihill netting an unassisted goal with 3:05 to play that provided the final margin of 15-6.
Steph Lazo had four goals and three assists for a game-high seven points for Penn State. Madison Carter scored three times and added two assists, while Maria Auth had a goal and three helpers.
Lindsay Shettle forced three turnovers to aid the Drexel defensive effort. She also had a draw control, while Rachel Warden had two draws and a caused turnover. Cummings and Jamie Schneidereith each forced a pair of turnovers. Nihill, Molly Savage and Carlee Ries - who also made five saves in 30 minutes of work - each had three ground balls to lead the team.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday at noon when they host UC Davis at Vidas Field.
