Delaware jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the game, scoring one run in the first and two in the second. In the bottom of the third, the Dragons were able to tie things up as Mari Gardner led off with a solo shot over the fence in center to get the Dragons on the board. With two outs, Taylor Lee doubled in two more runs to even the score at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the top of the fifth when Delaware took back the advantage with a solo home run from Mariah Kondravy. Then in the sixth, the Blue Hens extended their lead with three additional runs off of three hits to go ahead, 7-3.
The Dragons got one back in the bottom of the sixth after Baeley Reed hit a double to deep right center and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. She crossed the plate as Gardner put the ball in play. Still Drexel trailed 7-4 heading into the seventh.
The Drexel defense allowed a lead-off single in the top of the seventh but then were able to shut the Blue Hens down with three quick outs. Trailing by three runs, the Drexel bats came out swinging and put the ball in play. Taylor Kent and Vanessa Lightfoot hit the ball hard and each reached base on back-to-back errors by the first and second baseman, respectively. A double from Linda Rush brought Kent across the plate to cut Delaware's advantage to two runs. After the Blue Hens walked Kai Uyesaka to load the bases, Skirha came in to pinch hit and sent the ball deep to left center to clear the bases and give the Dragons a 9-7 victory in walk-off fashion.
The Blue Hens outhit the Dragons, 12-9 in their losing effort. Rush went 3-for-4 on the outing with two runs scored and an RBI. Tara Konopka picked up her fourth win of the season after coming on in relief of Katie Haley in the third. Jordan Cargile was credited with the loss for Delaware.
With the win, the Dragons snap a 25-game losing streak to CAA opponents. Drexel improves to 9-10 on the season and 1-3 in conference play, while Delaware moves to 12-14, 2-2 CAA.
The Dragons and Blue Hens return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader that will round out this weekend's conference series. The first game of the day is set to begin at 2 p.m.
