PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team jumped out to an early lead Friday night and never looked back in a 2-1 win over the Brown Bears at Buckley Field. The Dragons improved to 3-2 on the year, while Brown fell to 0-3. They are now 2-0 on their home turf.
Megan Wiest scored her first of the season to get the Dragons on the board, while Tess Horan knocked home her second goal in as many games. Anagha Nayak scored her third of the year for Brown. The Bears put early pressure on the Dragons at the start of the game, but Erin Gilchrist made two of her four saves in the first six and a half minutes. Drexel would turn the momentum around quickly, as it got on the board at the 9:19 mark on a blast off the stick of Wiest from the right side.
The Dragons would keep their foot on the gas, controlling the tempo through the rest of the half. Off a penalty corner, Rebecca Weinstock put a shot on goal that was saved by Brown goalkeeper Katie Hammaker, but Horan, who entered the ball on the corner, slipped into the play and knocked home the rebound at 26:37. Horan's second goal of the season put the Dragons up 2-0. Brown would get one more scoring chance before the half, but Gilchrist safely knocked it away to preserve the two-goal halftime lead.
Following halftime, Drexel continued to pressure Brown and control the pace. The Bears were able to regroup with a timeout with just under 20 minutes to play. Brown quickly found itself with two penalty corner opportunities, though the shots off both could not find the cage. The Bears would get on the board at 57:33 on Nayak's third goal of the season when she put one past Gilchrist from the right side. Despite a more frantic pace and a green card from Isis Cornelissen with just over three minutes to go, Brown could not come up with another shot or scoring opportunity the rest of the way, as the Dragons came away with the 2-1 victory.
Wiest peppered Hammaker all night, leading the Dragons with four shots on goal. Ellie Seid led Brown with three shots. Gilchrist made four saves on the night, while Hammaker stopped six of the eight shots on goal. Brown had six penalty corner chances to Drexel's five.
The Dragons return to action Sunday afternoon when they take on Lafayette at 1 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
