PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's soccer team was upended by UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association action on a rainy Thursday evening at Vidas Field, 1-0. The Dragons out shot the Seahawks by an impressive 20-9 ratio.
The first half was played mostly in Drexel's attacking half with the Dragons out shooting the Seahawks, 6-5. Shaelyn McCarty had an early chance in the first five minutes to set the tone, beating out the back line and taking the goalie head on. Her shot, however, went wide keeping the match scoreless. The Dragons then found two more major opportunities with a free kick outside the 18-yard box and a corner kick that resulted in two shots with one hitting off the crossbar from Lauren Currey.
UNCW retaliated against the pressure with a goal in the 19th minute. The Seahawks' Kirsten Bootes collected the ball inside the 18-yard box as Drexel was trying to clear the ball from the outside left. Using composure, Bootes struck a low ball to the bottom left corner of the goal past Drexel keeper Libby Baeza for the 1-0 lead.
In the second half, back-to-back shots were exchanged by both teams in the first ten minutes starting the period off with strong offensive force on both ends. It was a battle of the midfield with Drexel, however, outshooting the Seahawks, 14-4. The Dragons had one last chance in the final minute with two consecutive corner kicks from Emma Heckenberg on the right side of the field. Kiera Hennessy was able to find the final corner of the night with a header, but it went wide in the final seconds of play as the Seahawks walked away with the 1-0 win.
Baeza made two shots in save for the Dragons while Caitie Broderick made five for the Seahawks.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 7 when they host Delaware for a 2 p.m. match at Vidas Field.
