PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's soccer Lauren Currey scored her first career goal in a 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory against Delaware on Sunday at Vidas Field. Shaelyn McCarty added the second goal with seconds remaining in regulation to secure the Dragon's victory.
Drexel took the lead late in the first half with a goal from freshman Lauren Currey. Her first goal of the season came in the 37th minute following a Delaware goal kick, when Currey stole the ball inside the box from a Delaware defender and placed her low-driven shot in the bottom right of the net. The Dragons controlled the game offensively in the first half, out shooting the Blue Hens, 5-3, with three on goal from Currey, Shaelyn McCarty and Raenah Campbell.
The second half was a battle of the midfield with Drexel edging Delaware in shots, 9-8. One of the Dragons strongest opportunity came in the 14th minute following a free kick from Morayo Adenegan. Collecting a deflected ball off a Delaware defender, Currey redirected the ball with power back at the net, hitting off the right post and into the Delaware keeper Kamryn Stablein's hands.
With less than a minute left in regulation, McCarty scored an unexpected goal from 35-yards out that she bent into the back of the net after passing by Delaware defenders to give Drexel the 2-0 final outcome.
The Dragons out shot the Blue Hens, 14-11 while Libby Baeza made a total of three saves in net for Drexel.
Drexel will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Hofstra for a 6 p.m. match at Vidas Field.
