Women's Soccer Falls to Hofstra in Double OT; Currey Nets Two
10/11/2018 8:23:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Drexel women's soccer Lauren Currey scored two goals in a back-and-fourth double overtime loss against Colonial Athletic Association opponent Hofstra on Thursday evening at Vidas Field, 3-2.
After falling behind early in the first half, Drexel's Lauren Currey came off the bench and provided the heroics, tying things up with her second goal of the season in the 24th minute. Shaelyn McCarty took the ball down the left wing, beating out the Hofstra back line and getting a cross off outside the box. Currey then found the end of it after collecting the rebounded cross off the defender and placed a hard driven shot into the bottom right corner. Hofstra, however, regained the lead moments later with a goal off the foot of Lucy Porter to give the Pride a 2-1 advantage at the half.
Drexel locked down in the second half, turning away Hofstra's chances with goalkeeper Libby Baeza making three saves in net. While maintaining a strong backline, the Dragons continued to apply heavy pressure offensively and eventually found the equalizer with Currey's second goal of the game in the 84th minute. With composure, Currey settled a through ball inside the box, took a touch and placed the ball into the back of the net to send the game into extra minutes.
Both teams continued to trade chances in overtime until Hofstra put the game away with Porter's second goal of the game shortly after the final period opened.
Drexel out shot Hofstra, 19-16 while Baeza made six saves in goal for the Dragons.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 14 when they travel to Towson for a 1 p.m. match.
