PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's soccer team returns to action when it hosts Delaware for a 2 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association match on Sunday, Oct. 7 at Vidas Field.
LAST TIME OUT
An early goal in the first half was all the UNCW Seahawks needed to shut out the Dragons and take home the 1-0 CAA victory. The goal came in the 19th minute when the Seahawks' Kirsten Bootes collected the ball inside the 18-yard box as Drexel was trying to clear the ball from the outside left. Using composure, Bootes struck a low ball to the bottom left corner of the goal past Drexel keeper Libby Baeza for the go-ahead goal.
Despite the deficit, Drexel outshot the Seahawks by an impressive 20-9 ratio while Baeza made two saves in net for the Dragons. Shaelyn McCarty led all players with eight shots.
SCOUTING THE BLUE HENS
Delaware enters the weekend with a 2-9-1, 1-3-0 CAA record. The Blue Hens are currently suffering a two-game skid with loses against Hofstra and College of Charleston, losing both matches 1-0.
Leading the offense for the Blue Hens is Dani Kabat with three goals. Riley Dixon, Damali Simon-Ponte and Riley Curtin each have one goal on the season while Dixon, Simon-Ponte and Arna Arnthorsdottir have all notched one assist. In goal for the Blue Hens is Kamryn Stablein. She holds a 2-9-1 record while recording three shut outs in 12 matches.
THE SERIES
Sunday's match marks the 22nd meeting between the Dragons and the Blue Hens in women's soccer action, with Drexel leading the all-time series 14-3-4.
The last meeting between the two teams was during the 2017 campaign when the Dragons defeated Delaware, 2-0, on the road.
LMK DAY
Sunday's game will be in honor of Laura Meikle Koch, a four-year letterwinner of the Drexel women's soccer program who passed away in 2008 at the age of 28 after losing her courageous battle with cancer.
Laura Meikle Koch Drexel University Scholarship Foundation, a fund of the Chester County Community Foundation, has been established as a lasting tribute to commemorate La's energy, compassion, and love of life. The Foundation supports grants made to charitable causes that help people afflicted with lung cancer and other forms of cancer, as well as causes that were important to Laura including soccer, athletics, animal welfare and scholarship awards to students at Henderson High School in West Chester and Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Each year the coaching staff selects a player who displays the traits that defined the way La lived and played the game. This player is honored by adding a No. 9 ribbon to her jersey, presented a commemorative plaque and her jersey at the end of the season, and is recognized on the wall of the locker room with previous LMK Award recipients.
