PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team dug itself an early hole and could not get out of it on Saturday afternoon as the Dragons fell to Georgetown, 16-8. The visiting Hoyas (2-1) scored the game's first five goals and never trailed, leading by as many as 10 during the second half.
Colleen Grady and Lucy Schneidereith each had two goals and an assist to lead the Dragons. Schneidereith's assist came on a goal scored by her sister, Jamie, the first time the sisters have connected for a goal as Dragons. Karson Harris won six draw controls to go along with a goal, an assist and a caused turnover. Danielle Senour forced two Georgetown turnovers. Rachel Warden had three ground balls and a draw control victory, while Caroline Cummings picked up a pair of ground balls and had a draw and a caused turnover.
Georgetown got the scoring underway 2:44 into the action, then added two more in the next 61 seconds. All told, the Hoyas opened on a 5-0 run, fueled by two goals and an assist from Michaela Bruno. She would finish with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists.
The Schneidereith sisters' goal put Drexel on the board with 10:48 to play in the first half. Karson Harris followed with a goal just over a minute later to cut the 5-0 deficit down to 5-2. However, Georgetown answered with another 5-0 run to close the half ahead 10-2.
After Harris found Alex Beilman for the first goal of the second half, Georgetown netted three more to build a 13-3 lead with 17:45 to play. The teams exchanged goals over the next 15 minutes before a pair of scores by Lucy Schneidereith got the Dragons back within eight, 15-7, with just under two minutes to play. The Hoyas added a late man-up goal, followed by Cassidy Delaney feeding Colleen Grady for the Dragons' final goal in a 16-8 defeat.
Drexel will be back in action next Saturday when the Dragons visit Rutgers. That game gets underway in Piscataway at 1 p.m.
