PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team got back in the win column on Sunday as the Dragons pulled away from Monmouth in the second half at Vidas Field to win, 16-11. The game had been tied at four at halftime and the Dragons held a 9-8 lead 10 minutes into the second half before the Dragons scored four straight to pull away.
Colleen Grady scored four goals with three assists to lead the way for Drexel. Lucy Schneidereith also scored four times, including one that was assisted on by her sister Jamie Schneidereith. Jamie netted a pair of goals of her own, while Cassidy Delaney put together her first collegiate hat trick. Maggie Stetson, Danielle Senour and Alex Beilman also scored for Drexel, with Stetson adding eight draw control victories and Senour three caused turnovers.
Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Bennett registered her second victory of the season with 11 saves. Molly Savage also played a big role in the defense, winning two draws and causing two Monmouth turnovers while picking up three ground balls.
The Dragons got on the board first in a low-scoring first half, as Grady took advantage of a man-up opportunity to score an unassisted goal just under eight minutes into the game. Monmouth quickly knotted it up, but Senour's tally off a feed from Grady put the Dragons back ahead.
After Monmouth scored twice to take a 3-2 lead, Lucy Schneidereith evened it back up with 8:56 to play in the opening half. Delaney followed with a goal and, though the Hawks tied it up before intermission, they would never lead again.
Following the break, the teams continued to trade goals with Lucy Schneidereith and Grady both scoring for Drexel. With the score tied at six, it was Jamie Schneidereith netting the go-ahead goal, assisted by Grady, with 25:05 to play. Drexel never trailed again, taking a two-goal lead just 34 ticks later on Stetson's unassisted goal.
The score stood at 9-8 with 20:43 to play when Beilman swerved into the circle and scored from straight on. That goal started a 4-0 run for the Dragons, with Jamie Schneidereith scoring the next and Grady adding two more. Monmouth ultimately went more than seven minutes between goals. After the Hawks did get on the board, Delaney responded with two more of her own to make it a 15-9 game with 11:41 to play. The Hawks were unable to mount a serious comeback threat.
Drexel will now enjoy a 10-day layoff before its next game. The Dragons will head south to take on High Point on March 28, followed by a visit to East Carolina on March 30. Drexel's next home game will be on April 6 against Towson, the CAA opener for both teams.
