DELAND, Fla. – Taylor Lee belted a home run with the bases loaded to help propel the Drexel softball team to an 11-1 victory against the Cornell Big Red in five innings of action on Friday afternoon at the Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Fla.
Cornell opened the scoring early in the top of first inning with an RBI single from Bridgette Rooney, but the Dragons struck right back tallying one run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second. After drawing a walk, Holly Bridgeman stole two bases during two at-bats to reach third before Taylor Lee plated the freshman with a single up the middle to even things out.
In the following inning, Drexel quickly got runners on base with a walk and a hit-by-pitch before back-to-back RBI singles up the middle from both Taylor Kent and Elena Woulfe advanced the runners to put Drexel ahead, 3-1.
The Dragons then carried that momentum into the fourth where they tacked on four more to create a six-run deficit. Kent got on base first with a single up the middle followed by Bridgeman who reached on a fielder's choice to set up Linda Rush at the plate for a three-run homer. A sac fly from Ladrido then pushed an insurance run across to extend the lead, 6-1.
With the game practically in hand, Lee rocketed a home run out of left field with the bases loaded in fifth to put the run rule in place and walk away with the victory.
Brooklyn Daly was credited with the win. She pitched all five innings with no earned runs while only allowing three hits and one run.
Drexel will return to action tonight at 5 p.m. as it takes on the Stetson Hatters.
