NEWARK, Del. - The Drexel softball team split with Delaware as they opened conference play on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons were dealt an 8-6 loss in game one, before going on to defeat the Blue Hens, 3-0, in the second game of the day.
Drexel started off game one with a bang, scoring the game's opening run in the first inning thanks to Linda Rush. Rush blasted a pitch through center field for her team-leading fourth double of the season to drive in Taylor Kent for the 1-0 edge. The Blue Hens, however, struck back with a RBI single to center field to tie the game 1-1 heading into the second frame.
The game remained tied until the fourth inning when Jenelle Ladrido reached second on a Delaware fielding error to push two unearned runs across the plate for a 3-1 lead. Despite the two-run advantage, the Blue Hens did not let down and were able to answer with a five-run fourth inning to jump ahead 6-3.
Three runs would come home for Drexel in the following frame behind a home run off the bat of Hannah Walker, who ripped a three-run bomb out of left field to knot the score at 6s.
The final blow came in the bottom of the sixth when Delaware's third baseman, Dellatore, singled to left field to drive in two game-winning runs for the 8-6 victory.
Two Dragons tallied multi-hit showings, with Rush and Woulfe batting 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively. For the game, Drexel earned three extra-base hits with two doubles and Walker's homer. In the circle, Devon Grippe earned the start, throwing 3.2 innings of work and fanning three. Brooklyn Daly recorded 2.1 innings of relief work, giving up two runs and three hits to suffer the loss.
Game two started out in favor of the visitors, as Drexel scored two in the first to go ahead 2-0 early. The first run came when Kristi DiMeo advanced to second on a wild pitch to push Rush to third and plate Walker. A bunt off the bat of Taylor M. Lee then sent Rush home for the Dragons second run of the inning.
The Delaware defense shut down an attempts the Dragons made to score until a sacrifice bunt from Elena Woulfe put Drexel ahead 3-0 in the fifth. Delaware then answered with one run of its own, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit and defeat Drexel.
Rush led the offense with a 3-for-4 game while Lee and Woulfe each added one RBI apiece. Katie Haley picked up the win in the circle after throwing a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and fanning four batters.
Drexel will return to action on Monday, March 26 when it wraps up the series against Delaware with a final game at 1 p.m.
