PHILADELPHIA – Courtney Dietzel had a career day and as the Drexel women's lacrosse team collected its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season, 14-9 over William & Mary at Vidas Field on Friday night. Dietzel scored six goals, a career high that more than doubled her season output heading into the game.
Lucy Schneidereith added a hat trick for the Dragons, who snapped a three-game losing skid in CAA play to improve to 4-10 overall and 1-3 in league action. Jamie Schneidereith and Karson Harris each scored twice, with Harris adding a pair of assists. Colleen Grady had four assists to go along with her one goal. Alex Beilman and Cassidy Delaney also dished out helpers.
Zoe Bennett had 12 saves in goal for the Dragons, including one point blank stop late in the first half that proved to be a turning point. Each of the Schneidereiths contributed a pair of caused turnovers, with Jamie picking up three ground balls and Lucy reeling in two. Molly Savage had a team-best three draw controls along with a caused turnover, while Maggie Stetson won a pair of draws.
The Dragons held the lead for most of the tightly-contested first half, with neither team able to establish more than a two-goal lead at any point in the opening 30 minutes. After William & Mary got on the board first, Karson Harris quickly pulled Drexel back even with her first of the evening, a free position goal just 1:26 into the contest.
Courtney Dietzel would score the Dragons' next three goals, all off assists from Colleen Grady. Dietzel had just four goals all season coming into action on Friday night, but put together her second hat trick of the year in the span of just 15:40. The sophomore had an answer every time as the Tribe continued to tie Drexel at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3. The third of Dietzel's trio of first half goals made it a 4-3 Dragons game with 9:52 to go before halftime. It gave her a hat trick for the first time since the season opener at Johns Hopkins.
Less than a minute after Dietzel's third goal, Jamie Schneidereith finished off a feed from Cassidy Delaney to make it a 5-3 Drexel lead. The Tribe got one back, but Grady netted one of her own with 7:28 to go that pushed the lead back out to 6-4.
After another William & Mary goal sliced Drexel's two-goal lead in half, Zoe Bennett kept the Dragons in front with one of her 12 saves on the evening, a point blank stop of an Alexandria Specht shot from Bennett's left that gave possession back to the Dragons. Harris made her goalie's play pay dividends when she scored off an assist from Alex Beilman with 4:03 remaining, providing the halftime margin of 7-5.
Bennett's save seemed to be a turning point, as Drexel rattled off the first three goals of the second half – Dietzel and both Lucy and Jamie Schneidereith all scoring, with Harris assisting on two and Grady the other – to build a 10-5 lead before William & Mary got on the board 7:44 into the second half.
After the Tribe scored twice to make it a three-goal game with more than 18 minutes to play, Lucy Schneidereith put the game away and ensured her fourth hat trick of the year with two goals in just over a minute that once again put the Dragons in front by five, 12-7. Dietzel finished things off with two more goals, each on free position attempts, as she ensured the Dragons remained alive in the chase for a CAA postseason spot.
The Dragons remain at home for Sunday's game, Senior Day against Elon at 1 p.m. A win could pull Drexel into a tie for fourth place with the Phoenix, which defeated Delaware on Friday night, 10-6. The game will be preceded by the Dragons' annual Senior Day ceremony, where Beilman and Savage will be recognized prior to their final home game in the Blue and Gold.
