ELON, N.C. – The Drexel softball team dropped two games to Elon on Saturday afternoon at Hunt Softball Field. The Dragons fell 8-0 in game one before dropping the nightcap, 9-1. Both games were completed in five innings.
In game one, Elon used the first and the fifth innings to secure its victory. The Phoenix jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first using a fielder's choice and a couple of RBI singles. The remainder of the game was then scoreless until Elon put Drexel away with a three-run fifth inning. Elon's three runs would come from a bunt and a Drexel throwing error.
Linda Rush led the offense going 2-for-3 at the plate. Katie Haley suffered the loss as she allowed eight hits and eight runs in 4.1 innings.
In game two, Elon struck first again with a RBI single to third base before a triple to center field gave the Phoenix a 4-0 edge heading into the second. The Dragons answered in the following inning with a Reilly Jo Swanson single up the middle to drive in Elena Woulfe and cut the deficit down to three.
The third inning was then scoreless until the Phoenix used a five-run fifth inning to break the game open and run rule the Dragons for a 9-1 victory in five innings. Elon's rally would come from a pair of RBI singles and a double to right center.
Jenelle Ladrido, Taylor Kent and Swanson each went 1-for-2. Brooklyn Daly suffered the loss in the circle as she allowed eight runs and five hits in 3.1 innings of work.
The Dragons will regroup and return to action when they round out the series against Elon on Sunday, April 29 with a single game at 1 p.m.
