Towson, Md. – Marshal King had a career-high five points, but Towson scored eight goals in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeated Drexel, 17-9. The Tigers improved to 1-1 in the CAA and 4-6 overall, while the Dragons dropped their second straight league game and are now 4-6 overall as well.
Drexel trailed for most of the game, but was able to cut the lead to just one with 12:11 to go in the game. The Dragons scored the final two goals of the third quarter and then scored two goals in the span of five seconds in the fourth. Kyle Strang streaked down the field and set up Cam Harris, who scored on the run, for the first goal. On the ensuing face-off Jimmeh Koita won it clean, headed for the net and scored his second of the year to make it 9-8. Drexel had the momentum, but Towson scored eight of the next nine goals to get control of the game and pick up its first conference win of the year.
The Tigers scored eight times in a span of just under eight minutes in the fourth quarter. Johnny Giuffreda had four goals during that stretch and finished with a game-high five scores. Brendan Sunday had two of his three goals during the run as well.
Towson took a four-goal lead to intermission at 8-4. Matt Sovero had back-to-back goals in a span of just over a minute to extend the lead. He finished the contest with three goals. Drexel had trimmed the lead to three on a Matt Varian score. That broke a three-goal run that put Towson ahead by three, its second three-goal cushion of the half. The Tigers opened the game with three straight goals, but Drexel answered as King had a big first quarter. The junior fired two shots into the upper corner from tough angles. He then evened the game at 3-3 on the extra man. Varian fed King, who converted for his fourth career hat trick.
Shane Brennan made saves in goal for Towson. The Tigers outshot Drexel, 46-35, and committed just 10 turnovers. On the other side, the Dragons once again struggled in that department. Drexel committed 17 turnovers, nine of which came in the second half. Chre Teitelbaum had seven saves in goal. King had two assists to go with his three goals. Varian had three points, while Harris had a goal and an assist. Koita won 15 of his 28 face-off attempts in a losing effort for Drexel.
The Dragons are back on the road next Saturday. Drexel will play at Fairfield beginning at noon before heading home for Senior Day on April 21.
