Field Hockey Falls to Neighbor Penn Sunday Afternoon, 2-1
9/16/2018 2:44:00 PM | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team struck first Sunday afternoon but two late first-half Penn goals doomed the Dragons, 2-1. The Dragons fell to 4-3 on the year, while Penn improved to 3-3. Goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist made her season debut for the Dragons after missing the first six games (personal). Tess Bernheimer notched her seventh goal of the season, a new career high.
While offensive opportunities were relatively even in both halves, all of the scoring came in the opening period. Both keepers -- Gilchrist for Drexel and Ava Rosati for Penn -- turned away shots in the opening five minutes to gain early confidence. It would be the Dragons who would break through first, though. Just shy of 21 minutes in, Drexel earned the penalty corner chance. On the play, Bernheimer entered the ball, slipped back into the play towards the post as she's done so well to start the year, and knocked in the pass from Ally Chapis to give Drexel a 1-0 lead. About 10 minutes later, Penn broke through on a penalty corner of its own. Alexa Schneck cut across the circle with the ball and found Rachel Mirkin at the far post for the tap in to tie the contest at 1-1. Less than two minutes later, and just 90 seconds to halftime, Paige Meily had a penalty stroke chance, which she buried to give Penn the lead.
In the second half, Drexel weathered some early pressure from Penn to keep it a 2-1 game. The Dragons then applied the pressure themselves, but Rosati came up with two of her three saves in a three-minute span 15 minutes into the second. Neither team recorded a shot on goal the rest of the way as Penn hung on for the 2-1 win.
Penn outshot Drexel, 10-8, overall, but the Dragons sent one more shot on goal (4-3). Penn had seven penalty corners to Drexel's five.
The Dragons next host Lafayette on Friday at 7 p.m. at Buckley Field.
