Men's Soccer Blanked By Charleston, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team suffered its first shutout of the season, falling to the College of Charleston at Vidas Field on Saturday afternoon, 2-0. The Cougars scored early and added another goal in the middle of the first half and, though Drexel outshot them by a wide margin, the Dragons could not get the ball into the back of the net.
The loss wrapped up Drexel's home conference season, with two Colonial Athletic Association road games remaining. Drexel (5-6-2, 2-3-1) also has a pair of non-conference home games left in its 2019 regular season.
It did not take long for the Dragons to find themselves in a hole. Exactly eight minutes into the game, Charleston's Tucker Heffron took a perfectly-placed ball from Connor Walmsley and headed it to the far post for his third of the year.
Just over 20 minutes later, Heffron struck again. This time, it was the result of a broken play off a Charleston corner kick which sent the ball into the box. It ricocheted around close into the goal line before Heffron again got a head on it, poking it in to make it a 2-0 game.
Down by two, the Dragons did what they could to climb back into the game, but after 14 consecutive contests with at least one goal, their scoring luck had run out. Drexel outshot the Cougars 19-9 on the afternoon and 12-2 in the second half, but only five of those 19 shots tested Charleston goalkeeper Austin Shuping, who passed every test.
The Dragons will return to action on Tuesday evening when they host Penn at 6 p.m. in a Philadelphia Soccer Six contest. Drexel can clinch a share of its second consecutive Soccer Six title with a victory in that game.
