PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (3-7) won its second game in a row as the Dragons picked up a home nonconference win over the Yale Bulldogs (2-7) on Sunday afternoon from Buckley Field by a final score of 2-1.
Drexel was helped with goals from freshman Cailey Lever and senior Tess Bernheimer. Yale got one back late to cut the advantage in half, but the Dragons held on for the victory.
DU looked fresh in the early goings, making crisp passes and maintaining control as the squad was coming off a 1-0 shutout at Hofstra to open conference play on Friday.
Lever broke through 2:36 into the second quarter when she put one past the Yale goalkeeper. Junior Chandler McFeeley was credited with the assist on the play as she made a pass in front of the cage to set up Lever, 1-0. It marked Lever's third goal and McFeeley's second assist of the season.
Drexel held Yale to no shots in the opening 15 minutes and just one in the second quarter as the Dragons controlled the tempo.
Bernheimer put the Dragons up 2-0 late in the third quarter for her second goal of the year. In similar fashion to the first goal, freshman Amber Brouwer crossed a pass to Bernheimer for the close-range shot. The assist came as Brouwer's first collegiate point.
Yale cut the lead in half less than four minutes later on an unassisted goal from Bridget Condie.
The Bulldogs had another last-second chance when they were awarded a penalty corner with 41 seconds left in regulation. Condie was able to get another shot off but it was blocked before going wide left.
Drexel held on for the win to improve to 3-7.
