2-1 Loss at Delaware Dashes Postseason Chances for Men’s Soccer

NEWARK, Del. – Drexel Men's Soccer entered its regular-season finale at Delaware needing just one point to qualify for the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The hosts had other plans, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute and winning 2-1 on Saturday night.
The loss drops the Dragons (5-9-2, 2-5-1 CAA) out of the top-six in the conference standings and eliminates them from the postseason picture. The Blue Hens (3-8-3, 2-4-2) leapfrog Drexel into the sixth and final playoff spot but are not yet guaranteed an appearance in the conference tournament.
Drexel came out firing with an urgency befitting the occasion. The Dragons forced two saves from Delaware goalkeeper Renan Thomazo in the first 10 minutes and earned a trio of corner kicks. Against this tide of Drexel pressure, the Blue Hens scored the opener in the 17th minute. Timo Hummrich lashed the ball in from 30 yards out.
The Blue Hens fed off the energy of their first goal. Delaware earned a corner kick in the 30th minute and tested Drexel goalie Stephen Kopsachilis. The danger did not end with Kopsachilis' save. The home team got off two more shots in quick succession, both of which were blocked by a Dragon defender.
Delaware out-shot Drexel, 7-5 in the first half. Each side made three saves.
Just like the first half, the Dragons came out on the front foot to start the second. Starting in the 50th minute, Drexel fired off five shots in 10 minutes, but the Dragons failed to put the ball on target.
However, the Drexel maintained the pressure and finally broke through in the 72nd minute. Griffin Mallas whipped in a cross from the left side and found Harrison Coron, who finished the opportunity from 10 yards away for his second goal of the season.
With their postseason chances hanging in the balance, the Blue Hens wasted little time in their search for a go-ahead goal. Delaware struck for the second time in the 79th minute as David Vavrous scored to give his team a 2-1 advantage.
Vavrous' goal came on the Blue Hens' only on-target attempt of the second half. Drexel owned a 6-2 advantage in shots in the second half, but only two hit the target.
For the match, the Dragons topped their hosts in shots, 11-9. On-target attempts were tied at five apiece.
