Softball Set to Open 2019 Season at Madeira Beach Spring Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team is set to begin its 2018 campaign this weekend as the Dragons head to Madeira Beach, Fla. to play in the first half of the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational on Feb. 15-17.
Season Outlook
Drexel is coming off a 21-29-2 (3-18 CAA) season in 2018. The Dragons return 10 players who started at least 29 games last season, as well as three pitchers who appeared in at least 25 games. Kristi DiMeo, a sophomore who was named to the Fast Pitch News Preseason All-American First team, is the leading returner. As a freshman, she hit .399 and slugged .845 while leading the team in doubles (18), home runs (16), RBI (57) and total bases (125).
Carl Taylor is entering his fifth season as a head coach of the Dragons. He is joined by Michelle Schlichtig-Hastings and Ray Hastings, who are each in their second season with the team.
Scouting Akron
Drexel and Akron will meet Friday at 9 a.m. The Zips enter the weekend with a 2-1-2 record after competing in the Blue Hose Invitational in Clinton, S.C. Last weekend, Akron swept Morgan State and tied with Presbyterian while suffering both a loss and tie with East Tennessee State. Through five games, Sydney Jascoe leads the squad with 10 hits in 16 at-bats, while Adrian Smith has pitched to a 2-0 record with a 2.33 ERA. Julie Jones is in her 13th season at the helm of the program.
Scouting Holy Cross
Drexel and Holy Cross will meet Friday at 11:30 a.m. The Madeira Beach Invitational will be the Crusaders' first competition of the 2019 season. Holy Cross went 12-33 (5-13 Patriot) last season with Jackie Brewster leading the squad with 51 hits in 141 at-bats. Alexandra Held and Katy Watson handled the bulk of the pitching, going 4-11 and 8-13, respectively. Jen Lapicki is in her third season as the head coach.
Scouting South Dakota
Drexel and South Dakota will meet on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Coyotes enter the weekend with a 4-1 record after competing in the CSU Tournament. Last weekend, South Dakota swept Charleston Southern, split with Dayton and defeated Maryland Eastern Shore. Through five games, Jamie Holscher leads the Coyotes with nine hits in 15 at-bats while Dustie Durham sits at second with nine hits in 18 at-bats. Durham has also handled the bulk of the pitching to this point, holding a 3-1 record with a 1.98 ERA. Robert Wagner is in his third season at the helm of the program.
Scouting Belmont
Drexel and Belmont will meet on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Madeira Beach Invitational will be the Crusaders' first competition of the 2019 season. Belmost went 25-25 (6-16 SoCon) last season with Lexi Rouse leading the squad. She had 42 hits in 128 at-bats for a team-leading .328 batting average. Brooklin Lee was the Bruins' starting pitcher and held a 14-12 record with a 1.77 ERA. Brian Levin is in his third season at the helm of the program.
Scouting Butler
Drexel and Butler will meet on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Butler enters the weekend with a 2-3 record after competing in the 2019 Total Control Sports Invitational. Last weekend, the Bulldogs won games against IUPUI and Evansville while dropping contests to Western Illinois, Loyola and Detroit Mercy. Through five games, Jenna Foreman leads the Bulldogs with 10 hits in 20 at bats for a .500 batting average. Alyssa Graves picked up one win in the circle for the Bulldogs with a 3.00 ERA while Karli Ricketts holds an 0-2 record and a 5.23 ERA.
Looking Ahead
The Dragons will return to Madeira Beach, Fla. for the second portion of the tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 22 where they will face Detroit, Siena, Cornell, South Dakota and Colgate over a three day span.
