Softball Continues Action in Madeira Beach Spring Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – Following up a five-game weekend, Drexel softball will return to the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational from Feb. 22-24 for games against Detroit Mercy, Siena, Cornell, South Dakota and Colgate.
Last Time Out
The Dragons played five games last weekend against Akron, Holy Cross, South Dakota, Belmont and Butler. Drexel, however, could not notch a win and will look to earn its first of the season this weekend. Linda Rush highlighted last weekend as she broke the career home run record in the game against South Dakota. Rush hit her 30th home run, which broke the previous record of 28 set by Paige Collings from 2009-12.
Scouting Detroit Mercy
Drexel and Detroit Mercy will meet on Friday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. Detroit Mercy enters the season 3-6 after most recently competing in the Charleston Tournament last weekend. The Titans were swept by the competition which included ETSU, Charleston Southern, Virginia Tech and ETSU. Through nine games, Ellie Boteller leads the squad with seven hits in 18 at-bats for a .389 batting average. She also recorded a home run, a double and three RBI. Liz Murphy and Ashley Mauser split the bulk of the pitching to this point. Murphy holds a 1-3 record with a 3.05 ERA in 20.2 innings of work while Mauser is 0-3 with a 4.14 ERA in 23.2 innings pitched.
Scouting Siena
Drexel and Siena will meet on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. The Madeira Beach Invitational will be the Saints' first competition of the 2019 season. Siena went 18-26 overall and 13-7 in the MAAC. Cossack led the team with a .406 batting average on 56 hits in 138 at-bats. She also recorded a team-leading seven home runs, 23 doubles and 31 RBI. McMahon held the best pitching record for the Saints, going 8-6 overall with a 2.66 ERA in 100.0 innings of work. Bill Lajeunesse is in his ninth season at the helm of Siena softball.
Scouting Cornell
Drexel and Cornell will meet on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. The Madeira Beach Invitational will be the Big Red's first competition of the 2019 season. Cornell went 15-25 last year and 10-11 in the Ivy League. Erin Rockstroh led the team with a .410 batting average on 50 hits in 122 at-bats. Megan Murray was a close second on the squad with a .409 batting average to go along with a team-leading 15 doubles. Bridgette Rooney led the team in home runs with six. Lisa Nelson and Katie Lew split the bulk of the pitching. Nelson held a 7-6 record with a 3.74 ERA in 82.1 innings pitched while Lew held a 7-10 record and a 4.62 ERA in 109.0 innings of work. Julie Farlow is in her fourth season at the helm of Cornell softball.
Scouting South Dakota
Drexel and South Dakota will meet on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. South Dakota enters the season 7-3 overall and is coming off a 3-2 weekend after competing in the first portion of the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational. The Coyotes recorded wins against Quinnipiac, George Mason and Drexel while falling to Murray State and Central Arkansas. Dustie Durham sits at the top of the leader board for the Coyotes with 19 hits in 36 at-bats for a .528 batting average. She has also recorded two doubles, three triples, three home runs and 15 RBI. Not only is Durham the leading batter but she is also the Coyotes starting pitcher. Durham holds a 3-2 record with a 3.46 ERA and nine strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched. Robert Wagner is in his third season at the helm of the program.
Scouting Colgate
Drexel and Colgate will meet on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. Colgate enters the season 1-3 overall after competing in the Osprey/Dolphin Invite last weekend. The Raiders only win was against Jacksonville while suffering two losses to South Dakota and one to North Florida. Jordan Miller leads the Raiders through four games of action with five hits in 11 at-bats for a .455 batting average. Jessica Hay, Kaitlyn Borruso and Bella Crow all split the pitching evenly. Hay is the only one who recorded a win and holds a team-leading 2.62 ERA. Marissa Lamison-Myers is in her second season at the helm of the program.

Drexel will return to action on March 8-10 when it competes in the Hampton Blue and White Classic where it will compete against Albany, Norfolk State, Hampton and South Carolina State.
