MADEIRA BEACH, FLA. – Drexel softball's bats came alive Saturday evenning as they used a 14-run first inning to secure a 20-5 win against South Dakota in six innings on Saturday evening in the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational. Kristi DiMeo, Taylor Kent and Reilly Jo Swanson all were perfect at the plate.
The Dragons wasted no time as they opened the first inning with 12 runs to establish control of this one. DiMeo's homer kicked things off, sending Elena Woulfe and Taylor Kent home after they each tallied a single. After a walk sent Taylor M. Lee across the plate, Jenelle Ladrido struck a single to right and Kent doubled up the center to drive in three more runs. The hitting frenzy, however, did not stop there as Linda Rush smacked a two-run double to right center and Lee hit a three-run homer with only one out on the board. Reilly Jo Swanson and Walker had the last major plays of the inning, hitting a double and a single to right center for Drexel's 13th and 14th final runs of the inning.
Following the first inning, South Dakota managed to get five runs on the board, but it was not nearly enough to comeback and defeat the Dragons who continued to tack on runs throughout the remainder of the game for the 20-5 victory.
Devon Grippe earned the win in the circle, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out four in six innings of work.
Drexel will wrap up play at the Madeira Beach Spring Invitational tomorrow, Feb. 24 with a 9:30 a.m. game against Colgate.
