WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reid Bowering scored six goals but No. 14 Georgetown defeated Drexel at Cooper Field on Saturday, 13-10. The Hoyas won for the fifth straight time and improved to 7-1, while the Dragons are now 3-4.
Georgetown scored four straight goals in a span early in the second quarter to break a 5-5 tie and take a 9-5 lead. Jake Carraway had a pair during the run for the Hoyas. The Dragons broke the stretch when Varian set up Bowering with 8:05 to play in the half. The score remained the same until the final minute of the quarter. Varian floated a pass up high right before the shot clock when off and Bowering tipped it home with just 22 seconds remaining. Jimmeh Koita then won the face-off and got the ball in the offensive end. Varian scored his second of the day six seconds before intermission to make it a one-goal game at the break.
The Hoyas scored two early third quarter goals to extend the lead to three goals. Marshal King picked up his only goal of the game with just under seven minutes to go in the third to make it an 11-9 game. The offensive pace slowed down over the final 20 minutes of the game. Georgetown's Robert Clark extended the lead back to three late in the third, but Bowering was at it again, scoring his sixth with 13:25 remaining in the game. That would be Drexel's final score, as the Hoyas added an insurance goal late in the game to avenge last season's loss at Drexel.
Bowering and Varian, both juniors, each joined Drexel's 100-career point club. They became the 32nd and 33rd Dragons to reach the 100-point milestone. Varian had two goals and three assists in the game. King had three points in the loss for the Dragons. Chris Friedman had the only other goal. Koita won 16 of 27 face-offs and had 14 ground balls. Drexel outshot the Hoyas, 37-31 and had nine more ground balls than Georgetown. Ross Blumenthal had eight saves.
Daniel Bucaro had a big game for the Hoyas. He scored five times and had an assist. Carraway added four goals, while Lucas Wittenberg had a goal and three assists. Owen McElroy made 14 saves and picked up the win for Georgetown.
Drexel is back on the road next weekend at Providence. The Dragons and Friars will play on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
