Women's Lacrosse Handles UMBC, 10-6

CATONSVILLE, Md. - Sophomores Colleen Grady, Karson Harris and Zoe Bennett led the way for the Drexel women's lacrosse team, which grabbed a 10-6 victory at UMBC on Saturday afternoon to move back to .500 at 4-4 on the season. Grady had four goals and three draw controls, Harris had three goals, six ground balls and four draws, and Bennett allowed just six of the 20 shots that went her way to get through as she had one of her best performances in goal as a Dragon.
The Dragons also got single goals from Hayleigh Simpson, Courtney Dietzel and Claire Jarema to round out the scoring as they won back-to-back games for the first time this year. Simpson added a pair of draws. Peighton Bement caused two turnovers, while Harris, Lindsay Shettle and Rachel Warden caused one apiece.
UMBC, which has now lost six in a row since opening the season 2-0, got on the board first, 3:43 into the action, but that would stand as the only goal the Retrievers scored until just 3:11 remained in the opening half. In the meantime, the Dragons got three scores - two by Grady and one by Simpson - to build a 3-1 lead.
After UMBC scored near the end of the half, the Retrievers pulled even with a goal at the 22:32 mark of the second half. Again, though, the Dragons asserted themselves with three straight scores in just under two minutes to take a 6-3 lead with 19:31 to play. Grady added a third and Harris got into the action with a pair of goals to build the three-goal lead.
Again UMBC fought back, scoring two in a row to pull within one with 14:59 to play. Claire Jarema scored five minutes later, but the Retrievers answered back in less than a minute to make it 7-6.
That would be all the Retrievers could manage against Bennett and the Drexel defense, however. Drexel closed the game on a 3-0 run started by Harris and added to by Dietzel and Grady. The three goals were scored in the span of just 40 seconds, with Harris' at the 5:42 mark and Grady's coming with 5:02 to play. The sudden outburst demoralized the Retrievers and proved to be more than enough to send Drexel back up I-95 with a second consecutive road victory.
The Dragons will now close out non-conference action with a pair of home games beginning next Saturday, March 23. Drexel hosts Central Connecticut that afternoon at 4 p.m., followed a week later by a 3 p.m. tilt against Robert Morris.
