PHILADELPHIA - A high-scoring first inning led the Dragons to defeat Delaware in game one of their first conference series of the season on Saturday afternoon, 9-2. Linda Rush contributed two home runs on the game, while Hannah Walker added a solo shot of her own in the winning effort.
The Blue Hens started the game strong, scoring two runs in the first inning as Hannah Garber led off with a single and then was brought around to score off a triple from Brooke Glanden. On the same play, Glanden was able to cross the plate off an overthrown ball to third base, which gave the Blue Hens an early 2-0 advantage.
The Dragons got out of the top of the first and came out swinging in the bottom of the inning. Elena Woulfe led off with a single to left center and then Rush quickly followed with her first homer of the day to even the score. Kristi DeMeo kept things going with a single up the middle and then moved to second off a sharp hit ball to right center from Haley Hulitt. A sacrifice bunt from Megan Trivelpiece moved the runners and put them in good position for Taylor Lee, who put the ball in play and brought DiMeo across the plate. Walker's home run came with a runner on and put Drexel ahead 5-2. Reilly Jo Swanson drew a walk and then scored after singles from Jenelle Ladrido and Woulfe moved her around the bases. Drexel finished the inning leading the Blue Hens, 6-2.
Drexel added three additional runs in the bottom of the fifth as Woulfe led off with a double and then scored as Rush followed with her second long ball of the game. DiMeo drew a walk and then advanced to third as Lee hit a two-out single to center field. Walker singled through the left side to bring DiMeo in, putting the Dragons ahead 9-2.
Brooklyn Daly picked up the win and improves to 7-1 on the season. Delaware's Sarah Piening is credited with the loss and moves to 8-6.
With the victory the Dragons improve to 10-10 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Blue Hens move to 11-13, 0-1 CAA.
The Dragons and Blue Hens will return to action tomorrow to close out the weekend series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
