PHILADELPHIA - Softball picked up two wins on Sunday to close out a series sweep of Delaware in their first conference series of the year. The Dragons edged the Blue Hens, 5-4 in the first game of the day before going on to win 5-2 in game two. It was the Dragons' first three game sweep of a conference opponent since 2011 and it is the first time since 2008 that Drexel has opened the year with three straight CAA wins.
The Dragons got an early start in game one, scoring in the bottom of the first as Haley Hulitt knocked in Linda Rush to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. In the third, Drexel added another as Megan Trivelpiece doubled with two runners on to bring Elena Woulfe across the plate.
In the fifth inning, the Dragons extended their lead as Trivelpiece knocked in two more runs with a double to right center to give the Dragons a 4-0 advantage.
The Blue Hens got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs as Halle Kisamore sent the ball into center field with runners on second and third to make it a 4-2 game. The Dragons would come back to add a run of their own in the bottom of the inning, however, off of back-to-back doubles from Reilly Jo Swanson and Jenelle Ladrido to increase Drexel's lead to three runs with one inning to play.
Delaware put up a fight in the top of the seventh, scoring two to bring them within one run of the Dragons, 5-4. Drexel was able to hold the Blue Hens off as Hulitt picked up the save in relief of Devon Grippe.
Grippe picked up her fourth victory of the season in the winning effort, while Delaware pitcher Sarah Piening moved to 8-7.
In the second game of the day, the Dragons picked up an early lead again as Woulfe led off with a bunt single and then Rush followed with her ninth home run of the year. The Dragons would then add another in the bottom of the third off a home run from Kristi DiMeo, her team-leading 10th of the season.
Delaware cut Drexel's lead to 3-1 in the top of the fourth as Brooke Glanden hit a solo shot over the fence in center field. However, the Dragons came back to add two more in the bottom of the inning as Woulfe singled to left center with two outs to score pinch runner Emma Dryden and then Rush followed with an RBI single that allowed Hannah Walker to cross the plate and gave the Dragons a 5-1 advantage.
The Blue Hens would get one back in the top of the sixth off an RBI double from Glanden, but it was not enough as the Drexel defense was able to hold Delaware off to earn the series sweep.
Brooklyn Daly earned her eighth win of the year in the victory, while Delaware's Maddi Marsh moves to 2-6 on the season.
With the wins, the Dragons improve to 12-10 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Blue Hens move to 11-15, 0-3 CAA.
Drexel will return to action on Tuesday, March 26 as they host Lafayette in a doubleheader at Drexel Softball Field beginning at 2 p.m.
