NORKFOLK, VA. – Drexel softball downed Norfolk State, 10-2, in five innings on the first day of the Hampton Blue and White Classic on Friday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.
Linda Rush wasted no time getting the Dragons on the board with a RBI double to center field to plate Elena Woulfe for the 1-0 lead. Using this momentum, Drexel extended its lead to 4-0 in the second frame thanks to Woulfe. The sophomore doubled to right center, driving in Taylor Kent and Sarah Clinton before an error gave Woulfe the chance to score the Dragons' fourth run.
Drexel didn't stop there as Jenelle Ladrido sliced a single up the middle to advance both Hannah Walker and Clinton, giving the Drexel a 5-0 advantage. Norfolk State attempted to claw back with a home run in the third for two runs, however, it was not enough as Drexel continued to add runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Megan Trivelpiece started things off in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly out to center field before Woulfe, Emma Dryden and Kristi DiMeo secured the victory in the fifth inning. Woulfe hit a single to drive in Kent before Dryden stole home for the ninth run of the game. DiMeo then closed out the scoring for the Dragons with a single to center field, sending home Rush.
Drexel will return to action tomorrow with games against Albany and Hampton.
