PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University softball team (25-15-1, 8-4 CAA) split a doubleheader with the Hofstra Pride (18-20, 5-7 CAA) on Saturday afternoon from the Drexel Softball Field in Philadelphia, Pa. The first game ended with a walk off for the Dragons, 8-7, before dropping the second game, 4-3. Hofstra won the series, 2-1.
GAME ONE – W, 8-7
Drexel jumped out to a 5-0 with a five-run second inning. Elena Woulfe notched a two-run double with the bases loaded. Linda Rush then recorded a three-run home run to clear the bases as Drexel went up 5-0.
Hofstra got one back in the third on an error. The Pride then added six more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-5 advantage. Though the Pride had four hits in the inning, the Dragons committed two errors in the frame. At one point, Hofstra hit three straight doubles to score runs.
Still trailing 7-5 heading into the seventh inning, the Dragons needed runs. Two walks and an error by the Hofstra shortstop loaded the bases for Taylor Lee. Lee singled to center to move everyone up a base, scoring Rush, 7-6. The game would end on the next play. Reilly Jo Swanson hit a chopper back to the Hofstra pitcher who came home in a bases loaded situation. But her throw was high and rolled to the backstop as two came home to score, giving Drexel the 8-7 win.
Devon Grippe pitched the first 4.2 innings before being relieved by Meghan Conroy, who picked up the win with 2.1 shutout innings.
