Women's Lacrosse Victory Over Tribe Highlighted By Draws Record
4/7/2019 3:26:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Control of Sunday's Drexel women's lacrosse game was up for grabs in the final moments, but control was the Dragons' specialty as they pulled away for a 15-13 win at William & Mary thanks in large part to 12 draw controls won by sophomore Karson Harris. That total, believed to be a program record, helped Drexel win 19 of 30 draws on the day and overcome a late two-goal deficit for its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season.
Harris has now won at least eight draws in each of the last four games after no Dragon had won that many in any game over the past five years. She moved into sixth place on Drexel's all-time list with 112 career draws, and now has 66 on the season. The program record for a single season is 73, set by Emily Hoesch in 2005.
Claire Jarema put together her first career hat trick to pace the scoring column for the Dragons, who scored the last four goals of the game to get the victory. Colleen Grady had two goals and an assist, and three goals apiece were put up by Courtney Dietzel, Caroline Cummings and Maggie Stetson. Harris finished with a goal and two assists, while Jamie Schneidereith, Grace Osterdale and Marah Hayes each scored one. Hayleigh Simpson won four draws to complement Harris' total, and Schneidereith caused a pair of turnovers. Zoe Bennett had 10 saves in goal.
After trailing in the early going, the Dragons used a 7-1 run that started with just over 18 minutes to play in the first half to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 10-6 lead. Six different Dragons scored in the run, with Stetson the lone player to score twice.
William & Mary, which had scored just once in a 25:33 span of game time, suddenly righted the ship with 24:07 to play. The Tribe answered Drexel's 7-1 run with one of its own, broken up only by Cummings' goal with 16:43 to play.
In a game of runs, it was Drexel that had the final say. It began with Grady's second goal of the afternoon with 9:59 to play. Jarema finished off her hat trick 52 seconds later, pulling Drexel back even at 13-13. Schneidereith put a free position goal home with 5:19 to play to give the Dragons a lead, and Dietzel provided the exclamation point – assisted, appropriately, by Harris – with 1:50 to go.
The Dragons will now return home for their first CAA home contest of the season. It will be against a fierce foe, as Drexel will host the defending national champion James Madison Dukes on Friday night at 6 p.m.
