MALVERN, Pa. - The Drexel golf team shattered the school record for a 36-hole event as it defended its title at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational. The Dragons finished the tournament at 17-under par after a five-under par 279 on on Tuesday afternoon. In addition, Drexel junior Connor Schmidt picked up his second collegiate victory in his last three outings with a two-day total of 131 (-11) at White Manor Country Club.
The Dragons picked up where they left off on Monday. After taking a two-stroke lead over their competitors on Monday, the Dragons extended that lead and won going away, nine shots ahead of Akron, their nearest competitor. Cleveland State and Delaware tied for third, 10 strokes behind Drexel.
Schmidt was once again outstanding. He set the course record with a 63 on Monday, and stayed in the 60s by firing a three-under-par 68 in the final round. Schmidt made par on the first five holes before making birdie on both six and seven. He added two more on 10 and 15, before making his only bogey on the 16th hole. His 11-under-par total was also a school mark for 36 holes, four shots better than the seven-under par Schmidt shot at the Matthews Collegiate Invitational in Apalachian, N.Y. back in 2016. That was also the site of the previous team record for a 36-hole event at 11-under par.
Stephen Cerbara shot 72 on Tuesday and finished the tournament at 139, which tied him for seventh place. Angelo Giantsopoulos shot a one-under-par 70 for the second straight day and finished in a tie for 11th overall. Senior Michael Cook, in his first event of the spring season, had a two-under-par 69 today, and finished the event at one-under par.
The Dragons have now shot 29 strokes under par over the course of their last two tournaments. Drexel finished 12-under par at Chambers Bay over three rounds at the Seattle Redhawk Invitational, and followed that up with 17 strokes below par over two days here in Malvern.
