Softball Falls to Saint Joseph’s in Nonconference Affair

MERION STATION, Pa. – The Drexel University softball team (30-22-1) dropped its final regular-season nonconference game at Saint Joseph's (25-21) on Wednesday afternoon by a final of 3-1. The Dragons now close the regular season and conference slate at Towson on Friday and Saturday.
DU could not get its offense flowing in the single game at St. Joe's. Drexel managed five hits as the Hawks used three pitchers to get the win.
SJU capitalized on a first-inning error to go up 1-0. With one out, Kristin Cox reached on a throwing error. A walk put runners on first and second before Molly Kapala singled up the middle to score Cox, 1-0.
Drexel's best scoring opportunity of the game came in the second inning. Hannah Walker started things with a double down the line. With two outs and runners on first and second, Carly Bowen worked a walk to load the bases. The threat was then thwarted with an inning-ending groundout to third.
Kapala came through for the Hawks her second time up as she doubled home Cox in the third inning to give SJU a 2-0 advantage.
St. Joe's Taryn Grober led the fourth inning off with a double. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt on the ensuing batter before scoring on a base hit from Carly Rybinski, 3-0.
The Dragons scored their only run when Reilly Jo Swanson stole home with two outs in the top of the seventh, 3-1. Swanson had reached on a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then moved to third on a single by Megan Trivelpiece. Following two strikeouts and Emma Dryden pinch running for Trivelpiece, the Dragons maneuvered a double steal as Swanson scored on the play.

Drexel finishes up its regular-season slate with a three-game conference series against the Towson Tigers. The squads with play a doubleheader on Friday, May 3 starting at noon before a single game on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
CAA CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2019 CAA Championship is set for May 8-10 in Harrisonburg, Va., hosted by James Madison University. The top five teams in the eight-team conference make the double-elimination tournament. At 9-9 in CAA play, Drexel sits alone in third place behind JMU (17-1) and Elon (11-7) heading into the final regular-season weekend. UNCW (8-10) sits in fourth followed by a three-way tie for fifth between Delaware, Hofstra and Delaware (7-11).
